1. "It is free forever"
Free means a daily generation cap and 7 lifetime trial downloads, and free-plan songs are not licensed for commercial use. Downloads are usually what stops people, not generation.
Suno is a text-to-song model: it takes a description or a set of lyrics and returns a finished track - writing, arrangement, vocals and mix in one pass. What you get is audio you can play, download and edit, not a project file you still have to build.
You provide genre, mood, instrumentation and vocal type - or your own lyrics - and it returns two takes, each a complete song with melody, harmony, arrangement and vocals. The two takes are different interpretations, which is why they are useful: you keep the one whose chorus works and iterate from there.
The practical summary: it compresses "idea to finished audio" from days to minutes. It does not decide what you want - that is still the prompting, and it is why small wording changes move the result so much.
| Expectation | Reality |
|---|---|
| The right take on the first try | Usually takes one to three generations; changing genre or mood means generating again |
| Mixing-desk control over every track | You get section-level edits (replace, crop, fade, stems), not a full DAW |
| Cloning any voice | Technically possible, legally not: use your own voice or one you have permission to use |
| Free, unlimited downloads and commercial use | The free plan allows 7 lifetime trial downloads and no commercial rights |
| Term | Relationship |
|---|---|
| AI music generator | The generic category; Suno is one example, known for delivering finished vocals rather than stems |
| AI singing / AI singer | The vocal side: either the model's own voice or a voice profile you created |
| AI cover | Keeping a song's arrangement and changing the voice - done by uploading audio or reusing a track you already made |
| AI soundtrack / background music | Switch the instrumental option on; the workflow is otherwise identical |

V5.5 and earlier were retired with the V6 launch and cannot generate new songs. Older tracks still play and can be reused as source material.
It depends on the plan in force when the song was generated: paid-plan output is normally usable commercially, free-plan output is not, and the rule is retroactive.

A text-to-song tool: you describe the music or supply lyrics, and it returns finished audio with arrangement and vocals that you can download and edit.
No. What you need is a clear description of genre, mood, instruments and vocal type. The real skill is prompting, not notation.
No. A lyrics generator writes words; Suno produces the whole song. Many people use both - write lyrics first, then generate the track.
