Suno: what it is, and how to start

Suno turns a sentence or a set of lyrics into a finished song - arrangement, vocals and mix included - and returns two tracks per generation. Three things decide whether it fits your workflow: which models are live, what the free plan allows, and whether you can download and use the result commercially.

0.6 CNY per generation for 2 tracks · Unlimited MP3 and WAV downloads · Sign-up needs an email address

Short answer

  • What it is: a text-to-song model. Describe genre, mood, instruments and vocal type, or paste your own lyrics.
  • Which models: V6 is the current line; V5.5 and earlier are retired and cannot generate new songs.
  • Free plan: a small daily generation allowance and 7 lifetime trial downloads - free songs are not licensed for commercial use.
  • Downloads: metered by plan (roughly 20/month on Pro, 60/month on Premier); on pay-per-generation platforms they are unlimited and free.
  • What it will not do: guarantee the right take on the first try, act as a full mixing desk, or give you rights to someone else's voice or lyrics.

Which models are live

VariantBest for
V6 (default)Most work: pop, rap, cinematic beds, non-English vocals
V6 WildLooser, more surprising arrangements - useful when you are hunting for ideas
V6 MiniFast style tests when cost matters more than polish

V5.5 and everything before it were retired with the V6 launch: no new generations, but existing tracks still play and can be reused as source material. The differences are in V6 vs V5.5.

Free plan and download limits

Since September 2025 downloads are metered by plan. This is the part new users get caught by:

PlanDownload allowance
Free7 trial downloads, for the life of the account
ProAround 20 per month
PremierAround 60 per month
Premier + StudioUnlimited

Extra downloads can be bought. Free-plan songs are personal use only, and the rule counts songs generated before the limit existed. More detail: free plan limits and rights, and why downloads fail.

Three steps to your first song

1. Write the promptGenre and era, mood, lead instrument, vocal type. One clear sentence beats a page of adjectives.
2. Generate and pick a takeTwo tracks come back in a minute or two. Keep the stronger one and edit from there.
3. Download or editMP3 to share, WAV to edit; replace a section instead of regenerating the whole song.

The step-by-step version is in the full workflow; for instrumentals and sound effects see the AI music generator.

FAQ

Is Suno free?

You can try it for free, but the allowance is small: a daily generation cap, 7 lifetime trial downloads, and no commercial rights for free-plan songs.

Can I still use V5.5?

No. V5.5 and every earlier model were retired when V6 launched. Existing songs still play and can be reused as source material.

How many songs does one generation return?

Two. They are different takes rather than two lengths of the same take, and they usually finish within seconds of each other.

Can I use the songs commercially?

Songs generated while a paid plan was active are normally fine for commercial use; free-plan songs are personal use only, and the rule counts songs you generated before the limit existed. See commercial rights.

Does Suno sing in languages other than English?

Yes. Write the lyrics in the language you want sung; what matters is line length, section tags, and not switching languages inside one line.
