“Free Suno API” usually mixes two different questions: can you register without paying, and can you generate songs without paying? The first answer is yes. The second depends on the call and your current account balance.
Short answer
Registration is free, but generation is pay-per-use: a normal song generation costs 0.6 CNY and returns two tracks. Queries, downloads, WAV retrieval, timeline lyrics, prompt suggestions and authorization-document access do not add a separate per-call charge.
What does not cost extra
| Action | Charge |
|---|---|
| Registering an account | Free |
| Checking task status and song history | Free |
| Downloading MP3 and WAV | Free |
| Reading lyrics and timestamped lyrics | Free |
| Prompt suggestions and style enhancement inside any included allowance | Free within the documented quota |
| Requesting a commercial authorization document when eligible | Free |
These endpoints can be called repeatedly for automation and monitoring without creating a new generation charge. Downloading the same finished track again does not generate it again.
What consumes balance
| Capability | Typical price |
|---|---|
| Simple or custom generation | 0.6 CNY per generation |
| Cover, extend, replace section | 0.6 CNY per call |
| Two-stem separation | 0.6 CNY per call |
| Twelve-stem separation | 3 CNY per call |
| Voice-profile cover | 1.2 CNY per call |
| Speech generation | 0.6 CNY per call |
Always treat the price shown in the current request or pricing page as authoritative. Promotions, model choices and optional high-compute modes can change the amount.
Why “free API key” is misleading
Creating a key does not make generation free. The key is the credential that lets your server call your account balance. A free key can perform free reads, but paid operations still require sufficient balance. This is also why an API key must be kept private: anyone who has it can spend the account balance.
Pay-per-use versus subscription
Pay-per-use is easiest to budget when usage is irregular or driven by customer tasks. You pay when an operation runs, not for idle capacity. A monthly plan can be cheaper only when you can forecast high, steady volume and use enough of the included quota every month.
What happens when a generation fails
For tasks confirmed as failed, the generation charge is returned to the platform account. A timeout in your client is different: the request may still be accepted and generating, so query the song history before resubmitting. Submitting again immediately can create and charge a second task.
