Suno Max Mode vs Variety: What Each Setting Changes

Understand Suno Max Mode and Variety: consistency, 0-4 variation levels, 2x pricing, supported endpoints and when each setting is worth using.

Short answer: max_mode spends more compute to improve whole-song consistency and doubles the request price. variety controls how much stylistic change is allowed on a 0-4 scale and does not add a separate charge. Choose consistency first, then decide how much variation you want.

2HighControlled exploration

4MaxExperimental directions

When omitted, the V6 family defaults to Normal.

When Max Mode is worth it

  • The direction is already approved.
  • The whole-song structure needs to stay coherent.
  • Normal generations repeatedly lose consistency.

If you are still searching for a direction, change Variety before doubling the cost.

FAQ

Can Max Mode and Variety be enabled together?

Yes, when the endpoint supports both. Decide whether the gap is consistency or variation.

Should I always set Variety to 4?

No. High values are for exploration, not automatic quality.

Why does Variety return 400 on some endpoints?

Only supported generation endpoints and V6 models accept it.

Read the advanced parameter reference, V6 model guide, and pricing guide.

A practical decision tree

If the brief is already settled and normal generations keep losing structure, try Max Mode. If the brief is still vague and the results feel too similar, raise Variety first. If both problems are present, separate the experiment into two stages: use Variety to find a direction, then use Max Mode only on the best approved prompt. This avoids paying double while still searching for ideas.

Calculate the effective budget before enabling either control. A normal 0.6 CNY request returns two songs. Max Mode changes the cost of that request, while Variety does not add a separate price. Four exploratory requests with normal mode may be more useful than one expensive attempt because they expose several arrangements. On a client project where one direction is fixed, however, paying for consistency can be cheaper than repeatedly discarding unstable songs.

What not to infer

High Variety is not a quality setting, and Max Mode is not a universal upgrade for every endpoint. Check support in the API overview, keep the rest of the payload unchanged while testing, and record the model, request price, status and outcome. This makes later decisions based on measurable differences rather than subjective comparisons across unrelated prompts.
