Suno Studio: How to Mute, Cut or Replace One Section

Updated 2026-10-12 · Suno-API team

Editing one part of a song in Suno Studio: muting a track or a section, cutting a range out, swapping a section for a new take, and which edits get charged.

Most Studio questions are not about the whole song - they are about one part of it: how to stop a track from playing, how to take a few seconds out, how to swap one section for a better take. The catch is that those three things live in different places and only some of them cost money.

The short answer

What you wantWhere it happensCharged?
Stop one track (or one clip) from soundingMute on the track header (shortcut Shift+M) or on the clipNo - it is a timeline edit
Silence everything for a momentMute the master outputNo
Take a time range out of the songRemove sectionYes - it renders a new song
Swap a range for a different takeReplace sectionYes
Keep only one rangeCropYes
Export an instrumentalMute the vocal track, then exportExport rules apply

Mute, cut or replace: three different jobs

  • Mute keeps the audio in the project and stops you hearing it. Nothing is rendered, nothing is lost, and you can turn it back on.
  • Cut (remove section) produces a new version of the song with that range gone and the two ends joined. That is a render, so it is charged and the new version appears as its own song.
  • Replace keeps the timing and asks the model for a new performance of that range. This is the one to use when the section is the right length but the wrong take.

The practical rule: if you are not sure yet, mute first. It costs nothing and it tells you whether removing that part is even the right idea.

Replacing a section, and the seam

Replacement works best when the range you select starts and ends at a musical boundary - a bar line, the end of a lyric line, the edge of a chorus. If the join sounds stitched, the usual fixes are a slightly different range, or a second attempt: the model returns a new take each time, and the seam quality varies between takes.

If what you actually want is to keep going past the end of the song, that is extend, not replace.

What is charged and what is not

One rule covers almost everything: operations that produce new audio are charged; operations that only change marks in the project are not.

Not chargedCharged
Moving, trimming or copying clipsGenerating audio (the magic bar, the generate button, adding a part)
Volume, pan, mute, soloFade, crop, remove section, reverse, speed, extend, replace section
Writing MIDI notes, changing effect settingsStem separation and MIDI extraction
Playback - listen as often as you likeRendering a mixdown

Asking Studio to do something is free; it is the audio it produces that is billed, at the same per-generation rate as the rest of the platform.

Before you export

  • Muted tracks are not exported. Check the track headers first - a track you muted while testing will silently be missing from the file.
  • Export WAV if the file is going into an edit or a mix; MP3 is fine for playback and uploads.
  • If you only wanted the backing track, muting the vocal track and exporting is faster than separating stems.

FAQ

Can I undo a remove-section edit?

The original song is not modified - the edit produces a new song - so you always keep the previous version.

Does muting a track change what the model hears?

No. Muting is a listening decision. If you want a new performance of that part, that is replace or add-a-part, which is charged.

Why did my edit sound different from what I asked for?

Check the range you selected and whether the request belongs in the style prompt rather than in the edit box. Editing instructions work best when they describe the part, not the whole song.

Doing it now

Studio edits sit on top of the same generation engine: on Suno-API a generation is 0.6 yuan and returns two tracks, and downloads in MP3 and WAV are unlimited. The wider picture is in what Suno Studio is, and the API side is in extend, replace and stems.

¥0.6 per generation, 2 tracks, unlimited downloads

Runs on the Suno V6 engine. Download MP3 or WAV as often as you like. Signing up needs an email address, not a phone number.
